Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The Lokayukta police in Bhopal have uncovered a massive fortune during raids on the properties of former Transport Department constable Saurabh Sharma. The operation, which has been ongoing for several days, has led to the recovery of around 300 kilograms of gold, silver, and cash. As of now, authorities have confirmed the seizure of 52 kilograms of gold, 234 kilograms of silver, and nearly 3 crore rupees in cash from Sharma's residence. In addition, another 52 kilograms of gold and about 10 crore rupees in cash were found in an abandoned car in a forest area near Bhopal.
Sharma, who served in the Transport Department for over 12 years before taking voluntary retirement, had amassed significant wealth during his career. Investigators discovered that gold and silver were hidden in several locations within his properties, including under tiles in his office. The raids also revealed a collection of luxury items, including diamond rings, expensive watches, and a women’s purse valued at approximately 15 lakh rupees. These findings have raised questions about how Sharma was able to accumulate such assets while earning a modest salary of around 40,000 rupees a month until recently.
The abandoned car, which contained gold and cash, was registered in the name of Chandan Gaur, a close associate of Sharma. Gaur is currently missing, and authorities are actively searching for both him and Sharma. There are concerns that Sharma may attempt to flee abroad to avoid arrest. The police are also investigating the relationship between Sharma and Gaur to determine whether other individuals were involved in the illicit accumulation of wealth.
Alongside the precious metals and cash, investigators have seized documents related to several immovable properties, suggesting that Sharma owned multiple assets worth several crores of rupees. The Lokayukta police are in the process of evaluating these properties, and a detailed assessment of the full extent of Sharma’s wealth is underway. Authorities are also scrutinizing the sources of this wealth to determine whether it was obtained through corrupt or illegal means.
The ongoing investigation is expected to yield further findings as the raids continue. The Lokayukta police are also looking into whether any other officials or individuals may have been complicit in facilitating Sharma's accumulation of wealth. A full report on the raids and the total recoveries will be released once the operation is complete.
